Wallowing Windows
Does anyone else think they should delay the launch of Windows Vista until they can streamline it a little more? The minimum requirements are as follows:
- 800 Mhz processor
- 512 Mb RAM
- 20 Gb Hard Disk Drive
- 15 Gb free space
- SVGA (800×600)
- CD-ROM drive
Those are fairly high, especially when you consider XP Home will run on:
- 233 Mhx processor (300 Mhz recommended)
- 64 Mb RAM (128 Mb recommended)
- 1.5 Gb free space
Windows Vista Premium, however, is recommended to be run with a minimum of:
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB RAM
- A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero (that is to say, DirectX 9 and at least 64 Mb of memory)
- 128 MB of graphics memory
- 40 GB Hard Disk Drive
- 15 GB free space
- DVD-ROM Drive
- Audio output capability
- Internet access capability
Those are some seriously heavy stats. Not that most of the machines we own won’t be able to run it, but if you need all that (especially 15 Gb of space just for the OS) just to run the Operating System, you’ll need something considerably more powerful to to anything with it.

I’d just rather Microsoft get the damn thing on the streets now. While 15GB of hard drive space may seem excessive, it’s a given Microsoft operating systems are bloated with not only unneccessary code but also sloppy code. So, short of major recoding (which could take a year or longer), I doubt they’ll be able to further streamline it to any significant degree.
There are lots of home users who want to upgrade their PCs and will do so before Vista’s release. The sad part is, sooner or later, they will have to spend more money to upgrade from XP to Vista. Once Vista hits the street, XP support will be dead in two years.
Bottom Line: Release Vista now!
